A lone gunman entered a small church in Sutherland Springs, Texas Sunday and shot and killed more than two dozen people before fleeing the scene, including the teenage daughter of the church’s pastor. The killer was found dead several miles from the scene.

The Washington Post reports, “Witnesses said a white male in his 20s, dressed in all black and wearing a tactical vest, started shooting with an assault rifle as he approached the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs. Police say the gunman killed two people outside before entering the church and spraying bullets throughout the congregation during morning services in this countryside town about 30 miles southeast of San Antonio. Dozens of people were hit with bullets, and the dead ranged in age from 5 to 72, authorities said.”

The gunman has been identified as Devin Kelley, 26, a man from a nearby county in Texas. Officials have found no ties to international terror groups, but the investigation is still in the early stages.

As CNN sadly notes, 2 of the 5 deadliest mass shootings in modern US history happened in the last 35 days.

The race took place under boosted security five days after an attacker used a truck to ram people on a New York bike path, leaving eight dead.”

UVA student Aly Lee. (Image: Cavalier Daily/Aly Lee)

University of Virginia student Aly Lee ponders the true purpose of college in a piece for her school paper, The Cavalier Daily. What was here conclusion? It’s all about doing you. She writes:

“People can debate about what the true purpose of college is. Is it to prepare yourself for a fruitful career? Is it to discover who you truly are? Is it to make a lot of mistakes and live a little recklessly before being shrunk down into society’s gray boxes? Though there is no clear answer, it’s clear that all of these purposes seem centered on one thing — yourself. At the root of it, college is all about treating yourself.”

Montana State University student Jared Hammer takes a look at how the #MeToo trend, which has exploded in the wake of allegations centered on disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, has impacted men.

He writes: “Men had difficulty fitting into the conversation. While the majority of men chose not to speak up at all, there was considerable backlash for those who did. Some men opened up about their own experiences as sexual victims, while others admitted their role in the sexual oppression of women with #IHave.”
