It’s common knowledge — in this day and age — to know that social media is big business. Advertisers spend generously to make sure that their ads are shown on the left bars of Facebook or right under the short autobiographies of verified Twitter accounts. These social networks also serve as high grounds for college students around the world to let each other know the scoop on campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi is no stranger to this portal of communication. One pit stop that every Golden Eagle may want to make is in the Facebook group called “#TeamUSM,”short for “Team University of Southern Mississippi.”

The group “#TeamUSM” was started by Southern Miss student, Carla Cook, a transfer from Holmes Community College in Ridgeland, MS. In the early stage of this grou, there were very few members, and it was just people getting to know each other. Well, that is no longer the limitation of it today. The Facebook Timeline  of this continually growing group is filled with students selling and buying books from each other, advice, outing invitations, student organization promotions, and etc.

This is especially useful for students who are in need and students who are in service.

The most recent posts in the group are from the future Southern Miss graduating class of 2016. They are meeting their roommates and upperclassmen, getting advice, and buying books. Walt Whitaker, William Townsend, Nikki Monroe, and Ashalynn Briann are some frequent names seen in the group. CHAOS and Rhythm Rush are two student organizations that are seen providing information regarding their upcoming informational meetings.

I recommended the group for all incoming freshmen and transfers to navigate to. It has been the hot spot of many personal experiences to those who have found it by invitation or random browsing. Get that eagle pride and that eagle stride by communicating with other peers. “#TeamUSM” is growing and continuing to prove itself helpful at the University of Southern Mississippi.
